SPORTING.

Trespass, who has placed himself so prominently in the limelight by defeating the New* Zealand crack, Amvthas. was bred in New South Wales, and the interesting fact to bo related in connection with his early career is that at different stages he was held by four different owners. When first submitted to auction as a yearling he fell to the bid of Mr D. U. Seaton at 70gns, but the New South Wales sportsman did not apparently view his purchase in a favourable light, for lie sent the colt into the ring on {he same day as -he bought him. when Mr .1. Lynch, of Victoria, took the bay colt at llOgns. Transported to Victoria. Trespass passed into the hands of Mr Eric Connolly, and after he had been beaten, in nine successive

races, the latter sold the' colt to Mr W. R- Kembnll. Tn his first essay under the latter’s colours at Flemington Trespass ran Red Ruin to half a neck for first honours in the Miuook Handicap, and then ho rewarded the Masterton sportsman with a win in the Myrqss Handicap, in which fie carried Sst tilt*, and beat a field of fifteen.

Trespass contested sixteen races in New Zealand last season, and his only captures were the Douni Cup and Hutt Handicap, both of which events he won at Trentharu. Trespass was not accprded a nomination por tlie New Zealand Cup, and that circumstance would appear to point to a doubt being entertained as to his staying capacity. From Ist August. 1910. to Slst July. 1920, the total investments on the totalisator were £0,102,070. This in* formation was given m a return sttpnliod to the House of Representatives > on the motion of Hr X.. IX. Xsitt. The return showed that the total was made no as follows: Racing clubs, '* £6,942,95-1 10s; trotting clubs, £1,849,: ' 515 10s.
