THE OTAKI MAIL. Published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1920. VICTORY FOR PROGRESS.

- Wednesday T s T o w r: Board elsctioo was generally looked upon as a straight-out light between the advocate.® of progress and' s tagnat!oa. ihc Ratepayers 3 Association. ran a “ticket” whose slogan. /progress,” and the contest was far and a wav the most keen and exciting of any yet held in OtakL Thus the j return of the whole progressive ; “ ticket” by a substantial margin was ; a decisive win for the advocates of , progress, and is conclusive proof that j a very considerable majority of the residents are desirous of the local body j embarking .on a progressive policy for | the town. The po*l Ti ’ a 5 the heaviest j yot recorded in Otak*. "iVe rejoice at j this awakening" of Oiaki I rord j their lethargy. The result of '.he poll \ i>. Kc hope and believe, a sign of the i times, un«i a igtxr.y augury for Otaki j future. Let us hope it is the He- j ginning of a new era of prosperity t : progress* venecs for the town, which ! the he rough proposal will be carried. j crprecred desire of the people for pro- 1 grese. and little forward move can be \

made under tlie hampered conditions that now obtain as a town district. Once the borough is formed, proposals lor permanent improvements will very I shortly be brought before the public, and the town should make a forward move. The new' Board comprises only two of the old commissioners (Messrs Brandon anti Nicolsun), but the new members (Messrs J. R. Bills, H. Cockrell, T. Bax, C. Kilsby and A. W. Broadway) are all men of business capability, who have considerable stake in the place, and have displayed an interest in civic affairs. We congratulate them on their election, ami trust that they will always, remember that their election was a mandate from the people in favour of a forward move for Otaki. We are particularly pleased to see Mr Brandon elected at the head of the poll. Though a comparative newcomer to Otaki, during tiis short term as chairman of the Town Bottl'd Mr Brandon has displayed exemplary zeal and considerable ability in the discharge! of his duties. Ihe townspeople owe a great deal te hint for the tremendous amount of work he hits done cheerfully and well during his term of ollice, and his re-election by such tt big majority was a graceful and well-deserved tribute from the people,, who, on this occasion at least, have disproved • the frequently expressed opinion that the public knows no gratitude for its public men.
