Although the various events at t e Manawatu Hunt meeting aroused ,ome enthusiasm, the absence of music between the events was greatly missed. The Town Band, or even a string band, would have added considerably to the afternoon’s enjoyment. Oaekwar. who looked a winner tour furlongs from home in the Manawatu Hunt Steeplechase, but was brought down through Argo falling, is to re Cjivi'n :i spell. . K. Hatch has Nobleman looking well. He was fancied for the Waikanae Open Handicap, but the *0 u pace in the first few furlongs settled his chance. The son of Sir Lad do. however, is ill forward condition loi his New Zealand Cup engagement, and is likely to harden in the betting for that race. During his recent trip to Australia Mr C. O’Connor took a keen interest in the starting, as conducted in NewSouth Wales and Victoria (writes "Phaeton"). He mentions that a break-away is rarely seen on of the Australian courses,.as the barriers in use consist of four strands of strong half-inch copper rope. The rider? therefore have it right before them in a pointed form what it means should they anticipate the rise of the barrier. At Rand-wick, states Mr O’Connor, the conditions are less severe, the tapes being of lighter texture, but the appliances or the A.J.C. act very well. Mr O’Connor is to report the result ot hi? investigations to the committee of the Auckland Racing Club, and some improvements at Ellerslie may be the outcome.
