THE ELECTION.
To tho Editor. gir Will you allow me a few lines of your paper to protest against the action of certain persons in canvassing for the Maori section for the coming election on Sunday? It is a pity they have, so much to do during the week. I hope the white people of Otaki will see they are well represented on Wednesday, and e-lect men who will run the town for the benefit of all, and see that the Maori and whites both pay their rates. Some of the canvassers are not ou the town district roll. AVhy are they canvassing for the go-slow party? The only argument they arc holding out to the electors is that the progressive candidates will put the rates up and make the Maori pay his. But there need be no mistake about that, as the Government limit the rates, and they are up to the limit allowed now. And why should the Maori get off from paying the rates? I hope the white people of Otaki will roll up ou AVednesday and say if the town is to be run on business lines or not. —I am, etc., KATES PAID.
"Pro Bono Publico” writes at ] eu "th re AVednesday’s poll. He says: "1° is a pity that the Ratepayers’ Association o’r its candidates have not stated where they stand in this matter, and what they stand for.” He explains that it- is owing to the nominators of several Native candidates not accepting the re-election of the old commissioners that, an election is needed at all—the election was forced on the ratepayers who will know whom to blame. The writer goes on to say that the matter of the borough movement has passed out of the hands ot the local authorities, and concludes: "Let me assure electors that if the Ratepayers’ Association ticket, or at least a majority of them, are not elected. Otaki is doomed to a term of stagnation compared to which our slow progress of the past sis years will seem wonderful. Electors, vote for the Pro-o-ressives! They cannot rate you any higher than at present, unless you consent to raise special loans f?.r special works, such as water and light!” We ore unable to publish the letter in tub.
