OTAKI BULB SHOW.
A LOVELY EXHIBITION. It is pleasing to be able to congratulate the Otaki Bulb Society on its show, held on Wednesday last. Held under adverse conditions,, owing to the blooms being delayed by the cold weather. it was a great success in every Tvay, and reflected credit on the society and the growers alike. Much of the success of the show was due to the magnificent displays staged by visitors from Marton and Lower Hutt, who
society also deserved congratulation.
on the capital management of -the show, largely due to the able direction of Mr S. Nor grove (secretary) and the energies of a tew cnthusqistic officebearers. The class stewards also did their work well. The attendance at the show was very
good, and pj,l present were pleased
with the display. Mrs Hodgson had t charge of the refreshment rooms, and was assisted by a-number of willing workers, while a number of stalls in the hall, held for the purpose of raising funds for mission work, did good business. Buckingham (Lower Hutt), who acted as judge for all bulb exhibits, had some interesting comments lo make re the show. Interviewed by a "Mail” representative, Air Buckingham said the show as a whole was not quite so good as last year, though there were many exceedingly beautiful exhibits.
The judge was most ' enthusiastic over the champion trumpet bloom of the show a glorious "Renown” a bloom of great size and substance, with broad overlapping perianth petals and faultless form. Air Buckingham said that not only was this far away llie best bloom in the show, but. in his opinion, was absolutely the finest trumpet bloom he had even seen exhibited in New Zealand. Peeing that Mr Buckingham has had many years’ experience and has been to all the principal bulb shows in the Dominion of recent years, this is praise indeed, and Mr Weightman (Alarton), the exhibitor, may well be proud of the . bloom, which attracted great admiration from all. We may add that Renown is a bulb of recent introduction, and has seldom, if ever, before been , exhibited in New ealand. Bulbs are [ worth approximately £lO apiece. Air Buckingham also stated that the Macebearer exhibited by Air II- Small (Otaki) was a particularly fine speciexhibited in New Zealand. Bulbs are men. This secured, prize for best bulb other than trumpets. A feature of the show, said the judge, was the splendid display of New Zealand-raised seedlings, exhibited by Alessrs J. AVcightman. sen. (Awnhuri), 11. Poole, and A. J. Hobbs (Lower Hutt). The seedling poetaz (several varieties) shown by Air AVeiglitman, sen., are much in advance of anything of the kind in commerce, while the large trumpet seedlings exhibited by Messrs Hobbs, Poole and Weightman. sen., and the yellow incomparabilis by the latter grower, were all splendid bleoms that are au acquisition to present catalogue lists. Among the many magnificent blooms nt the show there were particularly fine specimens of the following varit;es: —Duke of Bedford, Macebearer. Gnnnet, Brilliant, Bernadino, Bath Flame, Ivorine, and Lord Roberts. The Ivorine shown by Mr Weightman, of Marton. was much admired. It was described by the judge as a 100 per cent improved Diana. Mr H. Poole’s numerous exhibits were not quite up to his usual high standard, this being largely accounted for by the bad season, which Mr Poole says is one of the worst he has experenced for bulbs. However, this enthusiast had a fine display. Of the local growers, Messrs H. Pmali, W. J. Summers, A. W. Broadway and H. Witchell were the princljial prize-takers, all showing a nice lot of blooms. Mr Small s Macebearer and Van Waveren/s Giant were particularly fine specimens, while Mr Summers’ Brilliant and Mr Broadway’s Scarlet Gem were greatly admired.
