HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above .Council was held at Wellington yesterday. Present: Grs. J'\ Ct. Cooper (chairman), W. J. Howell, M. W. Welch, .f. Whiteman, P. Cavanagli, and •Joljn Barclay. ’ . Correspondence. ■ ■ Correspondence was reach' with as follows: ‘ From motor driver, stating he had crushed during the month 547 yards of i metal in 18 days.—Received. From the Hutt Town Board, asking ! that the cost of maintenance and im- j provement of the main Hutt road be equally shared by the Board and the Council, and that if the Council agree to the proposal the Board to wholly maintain and improve the Maungaroa road to the corner of Lane street, if the Council would undertake till necessary work on two small portions of road on spurs southward of the town , district. Decided to accede to the request. From Wellington City Council, suggesting various improvements at Day’s Bay, and asking that trees which the County intended removing be left. — Referred to the inspector to report on. From the Palmerston North Borough Council suggesting that the Government lie approached to declare Saturday the usual half-holiday.—Received. From .John Ames, asking the Council to expedite a road from Pahantanui to the Plimmerton railway' station. It was pointed out that file Government had had the matter in hand for years past. —Decided to apply to the Government for the grant, and if available to push the matter on. From \V. H. Field, M.P., relative to the Paroparatunu post office and its erection thereof. He stated tiie P.W. Department intended to lake the matter in hand and if possible have the ] •'work done. It was pointed out that no tenders had been received for the work.—Suggested that the P.W. Department lie asked to do ihe work by day labour. In reply to a letter from the Makarn County Council, it was agreed to crush a quantity of metal for that body; but it was to be pointed out that it would be impossible to do so for at least a fortnight. The Minister of Public Works wrote I relative to the flooding of river valleys | caused by ill-regulated willow planting, j —No action, A Paraparaumu Matter. Mr Reid (Paraparaumu) waited on the Council and complained of the un- I satisfactory state of the Maungakotu- j kutuku road, and asked it be given at- j feution. It was impossible to do any ; heavy carting, while the river was threatening further encroachment. Cr. Howell supported Mr Reid, but said the matter had not been forgotten; it had been impossible to get labour. A groyne was now under construction, and it was possible, he thought, to secure the necessary carts. The bridge and groyne were both necessary, although the road was one used by a few settlers. He assured Mr Reid the matter had not been lost, sight of. Mr Reid said three settlers on the ' road paid over £IOO a year in rates. The Chairman pointed out that the matter would be attended to, while Mr Reid expressed a hope that the matter would not be “kept steadily in view.’’ . Inspector’s Report. The inspector (.T. W. Cudbv) report- I ed that the tender of Messrs Hall and | Templeton had been accepted for the i Pahautanui-Uppor Hutt road widening ! contract at £11:1, while £0 chains of j 1 metalling at Pakuratalii had been done i for less than £25. All slips had been | cleared off the l’aekakariki Hill road, which the Government had recently re- j graded and widened- The road on the ; - northern side of the hill was now in j good order. The metal crushed at the j Waiuuidmata some time ago was being j placed on the roads, while acetylene l street lamps had been Day’s Bay. Park’s line at Mungaroa had ( been metalled, and other TC-pairs in 1 various parts of the county effected. { The principal work during the month j was metalling and repairing, but j ] plenty still remained to be done. Whiteman, had met the Public j 1 Health Officer relative to the selection j i of a sanitary site at Trentham, bur j nothing definite had yet been arrived j , at. | Touching on the santiary depot, Cr. I Whiteman said there was a site in view which would only last a year, by which time fresh arrangements could be made. The contractor was adverse to the site because of the small area, he desiring sufficient land to graze his 1 horse. He asked that the matter be held over till next meeting, when it was hoped satisfactory arrangements would be made. —Report adopted. - Ranger’s Report. The ranger reported that during ■ the month he had seized 35 head of stock, while impounded stock unclaimed was sold and realised £1" 15s. A number of cases were to be heard next court day.—Report adopted. - Valuation Wanted. * Cr. Welch suggested that a new ] valuation be asked for. pointing out i that it was seven years since the last valuation was made. Cr.
