WAIKANAE NOTES.
The death occurred early ou Satur- 5 day morning of Mrs Davies, one of the best known natives of this district, and a near relative to ‘-the Grace Darling of New Zealand. ’ ’ Seceased, who has been in indifl'ereiit health for some time, was operated on in Wellington,, but on account of her weak state failed , to rally. Mrs Davies was"the daughter * of the late Mr JPehi Parata, and was highly respected. She was born in Waikanae some 30 or 32 years ago, and has lived there ever since. Her husbancftlied during the epidemic. A tangi is now in jmogress. Mr Alex. Kobiuson, who has been in ill-health for some considerable time, had a bad turn ou Friday, and on Saturday morning was taken to Wei lington for medical treatment. Ho/ i. now in .Nurse Lucas’ private hospital. Miss Hurrcll, schoolmistress, is at present on sick leave. During her enforced retirement her place is being filled by Miss. Mowbray. Mr and Mrs Hedley Brewer, old residents of the ton-nshix> and now of Mangatoki (Taranaki district) have been spending a fortnight here renewiug old acquaintances. They returned home ou Saturday. Mr Hanley, studmaster at Waikanae, who has been on a bus'iness trip to England, is due back at an early date. There is a deal of sickness in the district, and among those indisposed is Mr Tom Brown. He returned to his home on Friday, after undergoing , medical treatment in Wellington. Mrs (Dr.) Huthwaito is among the | j, .visitors at Mahara House. : A Gun Club has been formed here, [, and as soon as clay birds are available J- r members are assured of good sport, r ® The club has been affiliated with the j q New Zealand Gun Club, while Mr Tom ! y Parata is secretary. i tl There is a deal of discontent among | , c footballers here over the way in which j a the Horowhcnua Rugby Union manages j r( its affairs. The team is often asked to 1 w travel further afield than necessary, i j r and it has been pointed out that it would be better to meet some teams I g, half-way, say at Otaki, than be placed 1 g, to a lot of unnecessary inconvenience. ! g. The committee is considered too parochial, and should look beyond w ’Levin, where the headquarters are. Messrs Shand Bros, have taken over fc Mr Hint Parata’s farm, and are carrying out extensive improvements. An c;i area of sixty acres lias been put under the tractor and will be planted- with | oats.
