PARCELS BY MORNING MAILS.
- • The Otaki Town Board has long been t agitating for improved facilities at the Otaki post office regarding the closing of the early morning mail to Wellington. in response to the last inquiry made through Mr Field, member for t the district, the Hon. Mr Coates (Post- t master-General) writes: — “In reply to your letter of the 14th July suggesting that the residents of .| Otaki be allowed to post parcels between 8.45 and 9 a.m. without payment t of the special fee, I have to say that the object qf imposing the fee was to restrict, the parcels posted to a number which would reasonably be handled by the staff in sufficient time to catch the train leaving at 9.27 a.m. The con- t tractor cannot undertake to reach Otaki railway under fifteen minutes, j as it is part of his business to pick up and set down passengers, and the mail service is not sufficient to warrant an independent motor. It will, therefore, be seen that the time available in which to deal with parcels posted is considerably limited. It is regretted t that the proposal is not one which could be agreed to.” . ‘ t
