FREE BOOKS.
~ ■ FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN, i It has been generally admitted for some considerable time past that the prospects of inducing the Government to provide free books and other materials for Slate school children were distinctly remote. School committees, recognising tins, have lost no time in urging- the Government to •'. exert itself in alleviating hardship which many parents suffer, consequent upon the high cost of living, by providing books, materials, etc., in bulk, so that these could be obtained at cost price. Owing to the great shortage of paper such articles und increased considerably in price. In response to a resolution in this direction from the Campbell Street .School" Committee (Palmerston North), the Department of Education, Wellington, has written stating that it was hoped,, in tho near future, to arrange for the purchase of school supplies in quantity, but at the present time it did not seem to be possible to organise a scheme for the whole of the Dominion. The letter pointed out that the Education Board of each district should be able to arrange for supplying at cost price t.o school couiinittees such largely used articles as writing pads.
