e MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Levin on Saturday. Present: Crs. G. A. Monk (chairman), S. A .Broadbelt, Jas. Mc : „ Leavey, P. Coley, P. J. Ryder, H. Ear ber', W. J. Bryant, C. I. Darkness, J. 11. Whyte. , Correspondence. Correspondence was read and deal: with as follows: Prom State Advances Office, stating it had been resolved to .grant the , Council a loan of £4945 for the purpose t, .of supplying the Avcnue-Hcatherleji districts with water‘from the Levin borough.—Received. Prom the Treasury, stating that county fees, lines, and penalties collected during the quarter at Otuki, totalling'lds, had been paid to the credit of the county.—Received. Proiu Public Works Department on 1 closing cheque of £l5O (£ for £) for I , Waikaiva Beach road.—Received. Brandt, of Para paraumu, and who had removed the re mains of his child from the cemetery to Paraparaunui.—Bequest not granted, Mr Brandt to ho granted permission to make over plots to another person. Prom secretary of the Shannon class of the Workers' Educational Association, asking for a grant towards the class funds, and thanking the Council for past assistance. —Decided on the motion of Or. MeLeavey said this was an old complaint, while the engineer said : there was a natural depression, and he had agreed with Musso to leave tlm .matter to the incoming engineer. It the water was taken from him it would be put on another. —Held over. Prom A. H. Burgess (AVaikanae) drawing attention to hedges and overhanging trees on the upper end of the AVaikanae Beach road, and through : which the sun failed to penetrate in >' winter. Burtlier there was but little f room for traffic, while the road was very muddy. The Chairman said the complaint was justified, and asked that the matter be left with him to attend to—Agreed to. Prom Mr 0. Aces (lion, secretary , Memorial Committee, Manakau) asking for permission to erect a cenotaph , on the main road at Manakau. lie had previously been fold there would be no objection. ; The Chairman moved that it be left to the inspector and Cr. Bryant. , Agreed to. Prom I). J. McClure (Tokomnru) asking for permission to grant a. cow on the county road—Not granted. Prom Mrs J. Keunard (Tokomnru) asking for improvements at the roadman’s cottage, stating that “since the alterations were made the door was in a different place, and all mud:” Left to Cr. Whyte, with power to act. Prom AV. H. Field. M.P., stating some time back he had mentioned the fact that damage was done by wandering stock to sand cuttings at Ngarara road (AVaikanae) leading to his farm, and suggested that he bo given permission to erect a gate beyond the ccmcterj gate, and thus prevent further damage being done to the cuttings in question. If the Council would do'this he would relieve it of expense with respect to all «and drifts beyond the gate while such remained on the road.— Request granted, a gate to be erected to the satisfaction of the inspector, and to remain during the pleasure of the Council.

i-roru James Burton (Shannon) drawing attention to the bad state of the Tokomaru Valley track, and offering to undertake the job at the Council's rate of pay.—Offer accepted. •; _ Engineer’s Report. " Mr G. Catley (acting-inspector) reported as under:— jiiiki Riding.—Only- the usual maintenance tvas being done, The Rahui road would receive attention as soon as possible. r i .*■ Cr. Ryder said he had inspected the , joad and the drain at Noble's, and had 11 made a reasonable offer, but Mr Noble was not satisfied., and he suggested Mr Noble clear his own drain, but the Council to do some necessary culverting. The Council had no right to turn waiter imp Noble's property—thus it should be attended to. He asked that the water be carried away by a culvert and if Mr Noble was not satisfied let him take Court action, as he had threatened, if he so desired, iao far he had not got a gate for the gravel pit. Mr Catley said this work had now been attended to. Cr. Ryder said there was n nasty place near Jenkins’ property, and asked it be given attention. The water was blocked, but if the Council put in a culvert Jenkins brothers would do the work, which would do away with the trouble.

It was agreed to put in a pipe culvert near Noble’s (Ruiiui - road)' and l one near JenKins’ property at Te Walt a I 'road.

In answer .to Cr. ( McLcavey, Cr Ryder said lie had done nothing rela tive to Bevan *s fence. Cr. McLeavcj suggested something should be done and Cr. Ryder agreed. It was decided to allow Mr Bevan to do necessary work. I Te Horo Riding.—The main roads in I this riding were good.

Tho Chairman said necessary metalling had been done at Waikanae, Cr. Coley said the Gorge road was being attended to, and another woek would complete the work. The bridge over Mill stream was well done, but there was a nasty corner in the vicinity which needed attention. In answer to Cr. Coley, the inspector said ho had done nothing at Mr Beauchamp’s land. At the soldiers’ settlement, he said, the metal carta would soon be available for work. Cr. Coley suggested that pipes at Blanchard’s should bo utilised rather than left lying there. The roads, he | considered, were satisfacory, but he would like to see the North Otaki road completed. Decided to leave the matter of removing pipes to the new engineer. The inspector’s report was adopted.

(Ranger’s Report. The ranger (01. Watson) reported impending 37 head of stock during the mouth. At Manakau pound there was rio shed, no notice board, and the yard needed metal. There was no scale of charges, and only residents knew the the jilacc had a pound. Cr. Coley'drew attention to stock on the Kahui road. The ranger reported that lie had been over the road and that the people there were hard to deal with, especially as there was illfeeling between residents. Those who made complaints were often offenders themselvs. At Tokomaru he stock on roads over which he had no control, but some owners were to bo straight,eni a up. : k

Whyte said cattle were eontinu | ally on tire road except when the range! | was about. j The report was adopted, j Miscellaneous. ; Accounts amounting to £3009 17s, a large proportion of which was due for interest, were passed for payment. Decided that the soal of the Council be afhx'ed to a debenture of £SOO in respect to the Kuku Soldiers’ settlement, and to three debentures for £IOOO each in connection with the water supply loan at Avenue-Hcather-lca district, together with one debenture of £915.

The tender of the "Otaki Mail” at £l7 10s for printing the annual balancesheet. was accepted. This was the only tender. It was decided to |>ay the account of J. AV. Wallace and Co. (£69 3s sd) for 8 hardwood, subject to reduction of 21 pieces not delivered, also that the account of Crampton and Jepson (£l2) be paid. It was decided to effect improve; incuts at the Mauakau pound provided ■suitable arrangements could be made with the owner of the land. Cr. Coley reported that horses of Mr .Field’s had been impounded, and trespass not paid. In fairness to Mr Watson it was only right to say the matter was not under his jurisdiction; it had been said Mr Watson had shown i favour. The Chairman reported that an amicable arrangement had been arrived at between the Council and Mr Higgiuson—a matter that has been prominent for some time. Mr Watson said a man at To Horo had registered three dogs with tho Otaki registrar. He asked what steps he should take.—Decided to ask Otaki Town Board’ for a refund. Cr. Broadbclt stated that Mr O’Brien t was likely to be removed as a health ' officer from Palmerston, and he moved that his services be procured for this district.—Agreed to keep the matter in view. -«r,'V \ Cr. Harkness asked if the proposed Lcvin-Greatford railway had been before the’ Council, and received an answer in the affirmative. The Clerk said Cr. McLeavoy had been appointed representative at the conference, but nothing had come of the question. Or. Ryder said the matter of the Lcvin-Greatford deviation should be pushed on. especially as It meant a big saving in mileage. It was a golden opportunity now for tho Council to push the movement.
