HANDLING OF PEDIGREE STOCK. Gun ora! complaints wt*ro made :u Wednesday’s mealing ot the New Zealand i’ig Breeders' Association about the handling of slock on the railway. One member ehniaetcrised it a? * * simply murderous. 1 ’ A breeder >aid that he had shipped three sows at Jluleombe. and when they had arrived at their destination at Shannon, out 1 had three legs broken and one had one leg broken. Both had to be destroyed, and the remaining [»ig *s condition was seriou-. Another breeder said that he had lost a boar at Hastings through smothering. Kailway officials had closed it up- without ventilation, al though lie had allowed the pig adequate ventilation when he hau shipped it. All the satisfaction he had got was in being told that he should have insured the animal. He had subsequently insured a consignment ior £suo and they had all arrived iu good condition. The president said that he had never had to complain of handling on the railway, and ho lii;"'! pedigree stock largely, ilo thought, however, that the trucks, especially cattle trucks, could be a great deal cleaner, and spoke in favour or false bottom*. It was decided that it be a remit to the Council of Agriculture that better facilities ami conditions be enforced for handling stock.
