OTAKI (Id) V. Y.M.C.A. (1). A hockey match of a one-sided § ealure was played at, Otaki on Wed- | uesday between the local club and the 1 f .M.G.A. (Levin). The contest was 1 practically till in favour of the home 1 team, who scored four goals in the first ] spell and six to one in (ho second, a : total ol M l. Levin were weak in all departments ol the game, due, largely, to some of their picked men being absent. Many showed lack of knowledge—the forwards, generally, being tit sea. while the backs, except in a fetv instances, being most unreliable. The. forwards played too far hack, and consequently, except in isolated cases, were never seen to advantage on thr attack. On the other hand the Otaki team, in consequence of such a weak defence, had much their own way, and should Itqve increased flieir score. The local backs, although playing too far behind their halves, did good work. They would have been seen to better advantage closer to the vanguard. Mitherley, in goal, also had an easy time, but proved equal to the occasion v, hen the time arrived. The forwards - a fast lot -hit well, but .-till have the, fault of -ending tie- ball to the sideline when on the attack. With this i iult remedied it is safe to predict that, they would take beating. Uhootjng. at css-, was erratic, but the shots were man arid hard. Uiddcns scored four goaf- during the match, ail in good style, C. Batten scored two. Cook, Knox :iud Adselt one each, while Henderson •cored for Levin. Ferguson, who playid as e substitute f«r the visitor-, and MathoxoM were the pick of the btf'fks, while Billon was easily the pick of the forward-. Mi -is- Gilbert and Tahiwi were referee-. In the match Excelsior v. bhannon, r. aycd at shannon, tLw former won, J o. after a good, hard game.
