OTAKI LICENSING BENCH.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Otaki Licensing Bench was held at the Courthouse, Otaki, yesterday at 12 noon, when there were present: Messrs J. L. Btout, S.M. (in the chair), Ben. Ling, 11. Freeman, Jas. McLcavey, T. 11. Wiudley, and Win. Tompsitt. The police reports were, on the whole, satisfactory, and little objection was raised to any of the applications received. The following applications for publicans’ licenses were all granted;— Chtrs. Jas. Walter, Telegraph Hotel, Otaki; Walter Sotherau, Family Hotel, Otaki; Annie lliggotl, Jubilee Hotel, Otaki; John McGill, Railway Hotel, Otaki Railway; Thos. Quinn, Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt; Thus. Patrick Lyons, Grand Hotel, Leviu. Renewals of licenses were granted to M. J. Sultan, Levin Hotel, Levin; Thos. S. McGuire, Paekukariki Hotel,' I’aekakariki; J. D. Howell, Central Hotel, Otaki. •

Transfers of licenses were issued in respect to the Telegraph, Jubilee, Family and Railway Hotels, Otaki. A wholesale license was gruuled to Walter Hull, Levin Family Hotel. With respect to the Family Hotel, Otaki, Constable Sathcrlcy stated that the Rack lire escapes had not yet been lived, but the matter would be attended to, it was intended to erect these of wood, but he understood Mr Page, tj.il., had stipulated that the escapes should be of iron. The license was graute 1. but the Chairman said the previous instructions with respect to the lire escapes must be complied with. Paiut Wanton. ft was stated (hat the police asked that the Central Hotel at Otaki should be repainted. Constable Batlicrlcy, in answer to a question, said, the back portion of the hotel badly needed painting, but the front portion was not at all bad. Air Howell, the licensee, had endeavoured to get the work done, but it was difficult lo secure the necessary materials. He would get the work ijmiii as soon as possible. License granted, the Bench being satisfied that the licensee, had endeavoured to get the improvements effected. The Manakau Hotel. lu dealing with the application of •Herbert James Aitkeu for a publican’s license in respect to the Manakau Hotel, Air Ouglov, who appeared for applicant, said that great difficulty had been met. with ia regard to the erection of new premises Only one tender had been received for building in accordance with the plans as passed by the Bench. Bricks could not Ik*, secured, and at last it had been decided to alter the plans and call for f<riders for erection in concrete. A tender had been accept'd for the work in concrete, but Air Aitkeu could gix® no guarantee as to when tin- work could tie completed, as the contractor absolutely refused, to consent lo be hound by any time, limit, owing to the difficulty iu securing supplies of cement, etc. However, the. work would bo pushed forward wilh all expedition, 'flu; contractor said he saw no reason v.hy the building should not be suffleiently advanced by next quarterly meeting of the Bench to provide accommodation,, for the travelling public for meals as requested by the Bunch. 'Hie Bench decided to allow Mr Aitkeu to carry on until next quarterly meeting, when they could grant a license it they were satisfied wilh the progress of the work.
