WINTRY WEATHER.
The weather during the last few days has been exceptionally severe in this district. On Friday evening a heavy hailstorm was experienced all along the coast, and on Saturday morning even the low hills were covered with a white mantle. The hail did not melt in many parts '.'or several hours. Saturday and yesterday were bitterly cold colds, a severe southerly blowing, and to-day does not show much improvement, though the wind has fallen very considerably. . The Tararuas are covered with a heavy snowfall, and very seldom indeed has the snow been seen on such a low level as at present. Telegrams to hand report that severe weather has been experienced in Canterbury and Otago. On Saturday last ISin of snow was lying at Arrowtown, and in many parts of Central Otago. heavy snow was falling, and likely to continue.
The whole countryside was white in aiicl around Christchurch on Friday and Saturday last, owing to hoavy hail showers. Bf i Minor damage was done in Wellington on Saturday and yesterday by the gale.
