MANAKAU PEACE MEMORIAL.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. CONCERT, SALE, SUITER AND DANCE. A highly successful fuuctiou was hold at the Manakau Hall ou Wednesday evening last, in aid of funds for the Manakau Peace Memorial. Tho hall was filled with a largo audience, aud the proceedings were most enjoyable throughout, aud carried out most successfully. The stage had been most tastefully decorated for the occasion, auil presented a most pleasing appearance.
The proceedings opened with a con--Irt programme, which was much apreciated. Miss Nash contributed a itmofortc solo, Mrs Smith violin solo, lisscs IJcvan gave two vocal duets mtii encored), recitations were given y little Master Stopples aud Mr A. rovethiek (both encored), while the dlowiug contributed songs: —Misses 1. Wilson, l’ickett, and Mr F. Penn. Ir Andrew' gave a humorous reading, lisscs A. Muir and l’ovan supplied the ecompantmeiils. Mr Howard Andrew mule ati efficient chairman. Position of the Funds. Mr C. Noes (secretary of the Peace Memorial Committee) made, a brief Hatement with regard to the funds. He stilted that as a result of the first, canvass the sum of £1,31) had been raised. A coulr.u t hail been let lor (he, cenotaph at £l7O, and the necessary inscriptions would be an extra, costing approximately ££U more. Then it was proposed to fence, in a plot of about ,';iut x £l)ft, which would probably cost another £SO. Thus they would still require a fair sum to meet these expense;, towards which the proceeds of that night \s function would assist materially. Sale of Goods. An auction sale of gifts was then proceeded with. The gifts included fruit, meat, vegetables, and all sorts of carted articles, f.om a genuine German iron cross (taken from a German officer during the lighting) to a sucking pig. Iberything sold readily, and excellent prices were real] ed for practically all the articles. Supper and Daarce. After a plentiful and appetising supper had been served, the hall was cleared, and dancing indulged in. A very large number participated in the amusement, which was kepi up with much vigour, music being kindly supplied by a number of ladies. Altogether it was a splendid funcle,u, and should result in :• good round sum being raised for Manakau’c effort to erect a worthy memorial.
