The Wellington C:ty Council intends to take the necessary steps to obtain a poll of ratepayers for the raising of a loan of one million pounds for development and improvement purposes. The annual meeting of parishioner of Ail Saints ’ Church. Otaki. will take place in the Druids’ Hall on Monday night at 7.30, when it is hoped there will be a large attendance. Mr W. .Mr It. Anderson, auctioneer, advertises particulars ox Saturday's sale, to be bold at the auction mart.
Housewives will be interested in Messrs Wardcll Bros, and Co.’s price list, published on our fourth page of this issue. This firm soils goods remarkably cheap, as a glance at the price list will prove.
Mr Binns, watchmaker and repairer, of Otaki, is not unknown in this district, he having donated the valuable cup won by Mr G. M. Lethbridge for the best shooting score in the 19th Reinforcements. It is understood that the vacancies on the Board of Directors of the New Zealand Farmers ’ Co-operative Distributing Co. have been filled by the appointment of Messrs William Perry and 11. B. Mauusell (Mastertou) and G. L. Marshall (Marton). Dancing is a splendid exercise for children, and we are fortunate in securing such ellicieut teachers as the Misses Kimbell, who open a class in the Druids’ Hall to-morrow at 10.3 U a.m. Parents who are anxious for their offsprings to learn fancy and plain dancing would do well to make the
necessary arrangements. The Wellington City Council has desided to pay dairy farmers Is lid per gallon for milk for the month of May, .June and July. This will necessitate an increase of the cost to Wellington customers, who will now have to pay 7d per quart —the same as is beiug charged in Auckland and Dunedin.
The railway strike is causing considerable inconvenience and loss to market gardeners and violet growers in Otaki, who are unable to get their produce and flowers away. Many ol' the vegetables will not deteriorate by keeping, but the violets will not keep fresh, and growers will be put to a heavy loss. Owing to the high rates ruling in the city markets for vege-
tables. on account of the shortage occasioned by the strike, some of the local growers are making arrangements to send small lots to the city by motor. The main read llmmglt this district is being subjected to a heavy strain,j owing to the tremendous amount of motor traffic, on account of the nonrunning of-trains. A constant stream of motors is passing up and down the roads. The roads along this coast arc just now in very fair order, fortunately, and so far accidents have been remarkably few and not of a serious nature. -V big slip came across the road on the Paekakariki hill during Wednesday night or early yesterday morning, but it. was cleared in a few hours.
