MOTORING MISHAPS.
CAR OVERTURNED IN WAIMATE GORGE. Timaru, March 23. A car containing five Mcthven men —Harrison, Richards (2). Smith, and another— returning from a clearing sale at Richards’ Vfaiho Downs estate, tried to pass at a fast rate a lorry on the narrow road in the Waimate Gorge. Tlio car got too near the side of the road, and the wheels on one side mounted the bank and ran on the bank for tweniy yards. The ear rolled over, but righted itself. It was badly smashed.
The two occupants of the front seat, Harrison (tho driver) and another, sustained minor injuries, and were taken to Ashburton by another car. The two Richards (uncle and nephew) and Smith, in the back seat, were less fortunate. Both Richards had the collarbone broken, and Smith suffered a broken rib. They were taken to the Waimate Hospital, and are progressing satisfactorily.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ACCIDENT. Auckland, March 23. Au extraordinary motor accident occurred to-jiight, as a result of which fv.-o people are iu hospital. A taxi-cab was running down hill to file waterfront at a smart pace, and, when turning into the road ou the waterfront, it swerved and struck two scats placed by the water broadside ou. There were tw.. persons on one scat, Mr and Mrs Guest, and they were both thrown over the chains which fence off the harbour into tho water. A young man promptly jumped in and rescued Mrs Guest, and her husband managed lo get out by himself. Mr Guest sustained a broken an!.ls, and Mrs Guest is suffering from shock. They were both sent to the hospital. There was a woman on the second seat struck by the motor, but although knocked over and injured sho was able to go home.
