idyll ns, which has been off tho scent for some time, made a re-nppearaccc under silk at the Thames meeting when bo was saddled up to contest the Ooldiiclds Cup. The son of Hymottus looked nice and bright, and should further add to his winnings list when the ground gets a bit softer. After a few weeks’ spell Affectation is in work again. He has been engaged at the Rangitikei meeting. Air L. C.Hazlett’s brood mare Sister Radius, by Charlemagne U. —St. Regis, was brought back to Dunedin from Sydney this week, being safely landed from the Tarawera on Wednesday. Sbo was sent across to be mated with tho English horse Buckwheat, and is supposed to be in foal. Mr Hazlott is persisting in breeding on approved lines, and deserves to produce a top-noteher one of these days. The action of the members of tho Horowhenua A. and P. Association in lining W. Bell £5 for the alleged starting of a pony race at the recent show is being adversely criticised fn some places. It is stated that Bel! received no notice to attend a committee meeting to explain his action in saying "Go!” till too late, he being away at the Dannevirke race meeting, while it is understood that he has a good defence. It is understood now that Bell refuses to pay tho fine, hence he wiH be reported by the committee to the proper quarter.’ The A. and P. Association stated their intention of reporting the matter to the Metropolitan Club, but it is considered in sporting circles that this would be a wrong procedure, it being considered that Bell must bo reported to the club from which he received his license, The Kankawa Cnp, in connection with the Otaki Maori Racing Club, will this year be worth 700 sovs, 3n incroass of 100 sovs on the last occasion. The Hnia Handicap on the second day’s programme has been incaeased to £430, while the stakes in all total £3300, an increase of £3OO, which is gratifying to all concerned, and for which the club! is to be heartily congratulated. races will be run each day. It is ex-1 peeted that the stake money will entice leading horses to take part. The Otaki Club has now under consideration the erection of a jockeys ’ number board, of the latest design, which may be read from some distance. It will lie erected opposite the judge’s box. Such an innovation will bo greatly appreciated by patrons of the racecourse. It is hoped to have the board erected in time for the . nex* meeting.
