The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club is preparing a programme for a meeting during the Princo of Wales' visit. About £SOOO will be given away, and there will be six races. All details are not yet fixed, but already it'has been decided to include a hurdle race of £3OO, a steeplechase of £750, also a mile and a half handicap of £ISOO.
Red Dome, winner of the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday, was purchased last season for 350gus, and as her end of the purse was worth 2527 sovs, she must be accounted a cheap purchase. Red Dome is. another of The Welkin tribe, and is out of Red Streak.
Cetigne, who registered a third and a first on Saturday at Flemington, has won in stakes to date just over £20,000.
At the yearling stiles at Wanganui a colt by Absurd from Sea Elf went to W. G. Stead for 625gns. J. Williamson got the Absurd —Brozo colt at/ 4oogns. Other sales: Colt by Absurd — Lysistra, L. Ford, 375gns; filly by Absurd—Liquefy, F. S. East on, 200gns; colt by Absurd—Molrn Machree, J. Williamson. 2fH)gns; bay colt by Absurd—Cowl, J. Brown, 150gns. Goldstrcam has won over hurdles five times out of six starts since he was beaten out of a place in the hack hurdles at Marlon on New Year's Day; when carrying the minimum impost. la two months he has won 705 sovs in stakes for J. H. Prosscr, which should compensate for his disappointments on the flat.
Hymestra failed to win a race on the Australian tour, but has won a good deal in stakes since his return. Since New Year the son of Hymcttus has earned 13-15 sovs in stakes. W. Kraft has been offered the position of foreman at Kemhall's stable in the Wairarapa. taking the place of the late. Ben Nicholls.
Walter Young, a one-time wellknown horseowner on tiiis coast some years back, died last week in the Auckland Hospital. He raced Crimson Lake, Crimson Streak", and Convoy with some success The latter was the best horse Walter owned, and Convoy's Wellington Cup will be- remembered for a long time. In 1904 J. B. Roid's Gladsome finished first and Convoy second, but the winner was disqualified for being ridden by an apprentice unlicensed to ride. F. D. Jones, trainer Of Amythas and others, was tho apprentice.concerned. Convoy won several other Cups in the same year, viz,, Bgmont Cup. RaDgitikei Cup, and TaranaW Cup. In 1900 Convoy won. the Timaru Cup in the colours of J. Buckley. Horses owned by the Into W. Young were regular Competitors on the Feiiding course, Crimson Streak probably being the besi known.
