SPORTING.

Mr H. W. Clay, at one time the owner of leading racehorses, is negotiating for a farm in this district, on which he hopes to settle. The deal is practically complete. Row! Poto is now quite sound again, and his owner intends putting him into work next month, with a view to getting him ready for the winter racing. In connection with the Prince of Wales’ visit, arrangements have been made to grant totalisator permits for special race meetings at Ellorslie and Riccarton.

The Hawke’s Bay District Committee have suspended the jockey F. Cress, in connection with happenings at tho December meeting at Woodville, and which has been the subject, of several communications between tho secretary of tho Woodville Jockey Club and the secretary of the Jockeys' Association. There is a probability of a test case, as to the. rights o'f a club to deal with a riders’ license as in the present case, will be taken to the Supreme Court. At a meeting of Bulicr residents it was resolved to enter an emphatic protest against any totalisator permit being given to any racing clnb in honour of the Prince of Wales until the day taken from the Westport Jockey Club for the Jellicoe meeting at Christchurch is restored. The meeting also expressed its indignation at the attitude taken up by the Department of Internal Affairs, which is apparently treating the contract entered into by the Racing Conference and the Westport Jockey Club as a scrap of paper.
