PATRIOTIC MAORIS.
During the war a considerable sum of money was raised by the Maoris of the East Coast for the benefit of returned Maoris soldiers. The funds in hand amount to between £35,000 and £40.000, practically all of which has been invested in-farming pursuits, including one farm of (>OOO acres in the Bay of Plenty district, another at Hick's Bay of 5000 acres, and a third ■between Naliaka and Wairoa of 6900 acres. The first two are already stocked, but the third is being surveyed as soon as possible lo enable the erection of the fences and falling the bush on the property. A lot of money (says ;l n exchange) will have to be sunk into working these farms before the returns provided will be suhicroiit to pcimit of disbursement among the Maori soldiers, who number approximately 1000. The council which is administering the fund lias reported I lint very satisfactory progress is being made, and everything points toward a very successful venture.
