ELECTION AFTERMATH.
A CRIMINAL CHARGE. MR R. SEMPLE AS PLAINTIFF, The cases. Robert Semple versus Angus John McCurdy, and Robert Semple v. Flora Mary McCurdy, which were set down for hearing at the Upper Hutt Court on Wednesday, are said to he the first of their kind in the Dominion. The cases arose out of a statement alleged to have been published in the “Unit Valley Independent,” hefoTe the general election. The iniormations. which are practically the same in each case, are that the defendant McCurdy published in the ‘ ‘ Hutt V alley Inde : pendent” an untrue statement of and concerning Robert Scruple, calculated to influence the votes of electors, as follows: “I am a German and proud of it.” —Semple at Auckland, during the 1914 strike. The charge is a. criminal one, the maximum penalty being S6O for a private individual and £IOO for a company. The cases vaere adjourned until the next sitting of the court.
