TROUBLE AT FIJI.

PERMANENT MEN BEING SENT AS A PRECAUTION.

SILLY CENSORSHIP CAUSES ALARM.

Wellington, February 2,

Some alarm has been caused by the imposition of the cable censorship oh certain news relating ot Fiji, and the mischievous rumours. One of them lias been that there are serious happenings at Samoa; but this is quite incorrect, and there is no special cause for alarm about events in Fiji. There is a strike, of Indian -workers there, and this is a serious enough matter for the' industry of the group, threatening, it may be, the peace and order of the community. The New Zealand Government has been asked to take certain action, and it is in respect of this action that a cable censorship is operative. Mr Massey made a brief, state-' meat to-day: “There is nothing wrong I at Sniuoa, So far as I know everything is all right and going on well. I | should think that this rumour must : have originated from the fact that it has become necessary for the New Zealand Government to send the Tutanekai to Fiji on account of a strike there. This is being done simply as a precautionary measure. A number of members of the New Zealand permanent force will travel by the steamer. There is no cause for alarm or panic or anything of that sort. Wo have been advised that we should do this,

and wc arc sending the ship. I hope that it may not bo accessary for the men on board to land.”
