Ottawa, January 9,
She newspapers in the city of Winnipeg are threatened with early suspension owing to a dispute between the Government and some of the paper mills. The latter are defying tho Government orders to furnish Winnipeg with paper at So dollars per ton when it can be sold iu the. United States at double this price. The Government has stopped all cars destined to the United States. Some mill-owners propose to test thc’right of the Government, to control paper.
Washington, January 10.
It is announced that the United States during 1919 imported from Japan goods to the value of 303,993,000 dollars.
As a result of the marine engineers’ strike, over 250,000 tons of shipping are idle in the Commonwealth.
Potatoes dropped from £8 to £6 per ton, owing to the increased supplies available.
London, January 10,
Mr J. 11. Roberts (Food Controller) (states that dairy produce will bo con' trolled till the end of the month.
The “Daily Express” says: “The ‘trust fever’ reached a climax yester"day, when there were five amalgamations of chemical, glass, and insurance firms. Tlic total capital involved was twenty-four millions. Powerful combines now control shipping, engineering, shipbuilding, cotton and motor Industries. ”
Iu view of future war contingencies, the Tank Corps is evolving remarkable types of swift, noiseless tanks. One is fitted with discarded aeroplane engines, and has a speed of twenty miles per hour on the level and seventeen across country. It is able to run rings round the cavalry. Another type has a speed of thirty, a third is able to cross rivers, while a fourth combines the features of the tank -and submarine. It has a speed of twenty miles on land, and can then plunge into the sea and swim the Channel. It is officially believed that Germany intends secretly to construct similar tanks equipped with deadly gas projectors.
