"THE DEEMSTER."
Readers of modern stories will recall without any difficulty the profound impression made by the stories of Hall i Caine, during the past fifteen years, and to those as well as others who remember the dramatisation of the "The Deemster" under the title of "Ben'My Chree" as played by the late "Wilson Barrett, the picturisation of this absorbing novel, which is to be screened at the Otaki Theatre to-night under the direction, of E. J. Carroll, should be doubly interesting. Reveiwing this picture recently at Wellington, the "Dominion" said: "This is no weakkneed, exotic story, but a vigorous pulsating drama, possible, convincing, and full-powered—in short, it is a very perfect realisation of "The Deemster," one of the best novels Caine ever wrote. The story is made to live by the inclusion of a wealth of satisfying detail in scenic effects, quaint Manx customs and dresses, and a little bit of real life of that part of the isle not known to the average tourist. The acting is generally of such a high OTder of merit that the story leaps at one vividly from the screen, and engrosses the attention from beginning to end. The scenery is superb throughout, and the light on the cliff edge is most realistically depicted." The author's sou. Derwent Hall Caine, appears as the incorrigible wayward, but lovable Dan, and Marion Swayne, a notable English actress, appears as the long-suffering but steadfast Mona. The loves of these characters, by the way, was the inspiration for Stephen Adam's famous song "Mona." Om Saturday next "Amarilly of Clothes Line Alley" will be the star, and for fun it cannot be beaten, being full of Irish humour.
