THE TARARUA TRACK.

PROPOSED BIG IMPROVEMENTS. CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. . A conference of representatives from tho Wairarapa Tararua Track Committee,' the Otaki Tararua Track Committee, and the Wellington Tramping Club was held at Wellington on Monday last, when eleven gentlemen were present, Greytown being represented by Messrs Bassett and Webster, and Otaki by Messrs G. M. Lethbridge and Prank Penn. Mr W. H. Field, M.P., occupied the chair. Tho main object of the conference was to decide the best method of expending tho Government grant of £SOO, which was placed on tho Estimates last session. It was decided to utilise the money to the best advantage in improving the whole track, irrespective of tho locality of the work to be undertaken. After very caroful consideration the meeting adopted the following programme of work in expenditure of tho money provided: — 1. Track from Otaki Forks to Mt. Hector , 2. Hut between Field Peak and - Hector 3. Cable and bosun chair or suspension bridge 4. Marking track with posts and pointers 5. Track from Mt. Hector to end of Beehives, round sides SO 6. Extension of Alpha Hut 65 7. Table Top Hut 100 Total In connection with the grant of £IOO for Table Top hut, it was pointed out that the Greytown Committee had been unable as yet to expend tho money, owing to tho track not being completed that far. " •

The above programme is subject to the approval of the Government, and aTrange'mcnts were made for tho pro--gramme being submitted to the Tourist Department. Tentative proposals were made re the Carrying out of the proposed works, and it was decided that the Otaki Committoc undertake control of tho work as far as Mt. Hector (including the erection of the central hut between Field Peak and Mt. Hector), the work on the other side to be entrusted to the Greytown Committee. Tho conference was a most harmonious one, and, provided the Government approves tho expenditure of the money, tho work will bo put in hand as .soon as possible.
