. OTAKI TO THE FORE. ! S> ; The Wellington-Rose and Carnation Club held its first public show since • 1916 at the Town Hall on Wednesday, j The show was not so attractive a.\ I usual, owing to the big trade' exhibits j of pot plants, etc., being missing. It | was a rose show pure and simple, and ; there was a splendid entry of good j being keen in J practically every section. Otaki was well advertised at the show. Mr H. Wifcliell won firsts for three roses, any varieties, and for three pink roses, and was also' second for threo creams or whites; while Mr Frank Penn won seven first prizes and five seconds —all in roses, easily winning the points prize in the amateur section with 14 points, Mr H. Witchell second with five. This I j being Mr Penn’s second win in succession of this prize, he retains the - | handsome trophy presented by Messrs E. Pearce and Co. Mr Penn also won Miss JoscpF’s silver cup (for the second year in succession) for twelve roses—threo reds, three yellows, three creams or whites, and three pinks. This trophy must bo won three times before being retained by the winner. The champion rose—a nice specimen Of Mrs W. J. Grant —was staged by Mr Styles, of Wellington, while Mr F. K. Porteous, of Khandallah, won a hand- j some trophy offered for the best six * roses grown within a radius of five miles from Wellington. In the decorative section, Miss Penn (Otaki) won first prize for decorated table (judging by ballot). Her table was decorated with Irish Elegance, Souvenir La Meseh and Irish Fireflame roses. This j young lady also won second prize for bowl of roses.
