MANAKAU.
! A most enthusiastic public meeting was held at Manakau schoolroom last night to consider the matter of erecting a suitable memorial to fallen soldiers and those who have served. Apologies were received from Mrs Drake, Messrs DalzeTi, P. Sinu-ox and Kingdom There was a splendid attendance, Mr L. H. Atkins was in the chair, while Mr C. Noes acted as secretary pro fern. The Chairman explained that the meeting was called on behalf of the Patriotic Society, and invited a free and full discussion. He stated that the matter of the memorial was one beyond the jurisdiction of (lie Patriotic Society, but one for the general public, and that there was a recommendation from tho ! society that an obelisk be erected in a 1 public place. Mr Clifford moved, and Mr J. Nichol- i son seconded, that something bo done in j tlio shape of erecting n memorial. This i was discussed, Mr Andrew reporting i Hint lie had received quotations from two firms relative to suitable monuments, After a free discussion on the motion. Mr Bathgate moved an amendment, seconded by Mr Horoig. that a library and reading room be erected. Further discussion followed, and it was pointed out that while a library would ■ be most acceptable, it was beyond the | powers of tho Manakau people, and 1 therefore it would be better to have a j scheme that could be carried out in pre- ‘ fercnce to one that might fail. Eventually the motion was almost unanimously carried. Messrs Atkins, Nccs, and Andrew were then appointed a subcommittee to make fuller enquiries relative to a suitable obelisk, their report to be considered at a meeting to inheld on Tuesday night. It was also agreed that the district be canvassed, and in this connection Mrs Clifford and Mr W. Bo van offered their services. An executive committee, comprising Messrs Atkins (chairman), Nets (secretary), Clifford, Andrew, and AV. Bcvan, were appointed. It was suggested that a clock or lamp be placed on top of the obelisk. Mutters in connection with (Incoming school concert were also discussed, gud it was agreed to fix tinprice of tickets at 2s 6d for gents and Is (id for ladies, to admit to the.concert and dance, and enable holders also to partake of supper. The ladies present undertook to secure refreshments, and agreed to meet at an early date to organise.
