The custom ‘of granting mc-Jals to brave men ia an. old one, but-awarding medals to towns would seem -to be a 'custom peculiar to the war just ended ijiege, in Belgium, Was, the lirst town to be thus honoured, .having been awarded tiie Legion of Honour by the French Government in recognition of its.heroic stand against the German invaders in 19.1-1. Later on IJille received the Croix dt Guerre, and at a more recent date,still the same decoration, with palms, war awarded to Dunkirk. Quite recently, too, this latter town was awarded the D.S.O. by Kin;.George, the bearer of lKe decoration being Admiral Sir Roger Keyes, who publicly presented it to the mayor on ids sovereign ’s -behalf.
