SPORTING.
Aa unrehearsed incident was associated with the Ellerslie races last week. As the contesting horses in the maiden hurdle race charged the second obstacle opposite the members’ stand, a horse ridden by one of the constables on duty outside the rails evidently had his blood roused, with the result that he took control and leaped a row of trestles, and, continuing on, cleared the high rail 'surrounding the rase track. The constable sat his horse well in the little escapade for which the animal was responsible, and no damage resulted.
The winner of the Welcome Stakes at the Auckland meeting, Weary Willie, is by Bezonian —Satisfaire, and is owned by the Wellington sportsman, Mr L G. Duncan, who bred him at the Waikanae stud. His victory' was well deserved, as he ran second in the Avon- - <!•>!(» Stakes, Wellesley Stakes, and Wellington Juvenile Handicap. Mr W. G. Stead is said to have informed the sporting writer of the “Australasian” that no further effort would be made to train Sasasof, who would in future be used as a hack. A hack that has won both the Melbourne and New Zealand Caps, and run second in the Auckland Cup, is i3ther a swell sort of hack.
