LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

CLOSE OF THE SESSION. The Otaki Literary and Debating Club closed a most successful session on Wednesday evening last, when there was a good attendance of members to hear the annual journal read. The Rev. C. F. Petrie, M.A., occupied the chair. Mr Byron Brown (editor) presented the journal, which contained a considerable number of articles of a high literary order. Mr Brown’s leading article, touching on tho consummation of war, and peace problems, was a masterly effort. The other articles were of a varied nature, comprising brief essays, historical articles, etc., and a considerable number of original poems, several of which were really excellent. Several other brief clippings were read. Mr Brown was assisted in the reading by Rev. Blathwayt and Mr Frank Penn. Mr Brown was heartily thanked for preparing such an excellent journal, which was much enjoyed by all. The President said he thought the journal was quite up to the usual high literary standard of the Club’s journals, though not quite so bulky as some. The President gave a brief review of the work of the session, and congratulated members on the success that had attended their efforts. The membership was higher than ever before, the meetings bad been well, attended and most helpful to ail, and they had ended the session with a credit balance in hand.
