An earthquake shock was felt in Otaki and district at about 30 minutes tor 7 yesterday morning. Otaki and district experienced a very light frost yesterday, but luckily it was j not severe enough to do much damage.

A nen- food —Breakfast D-light—is claimed to be out of the ordinary, and those who have their doubts should secure a packet from Mr Cockrell* In answer to a question in the House of Representatives the Premier stated that as far as Lc could tell the general election would not be before the end of the second week in December.

Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., have been instructed to sell the Central Hotel and adjoining ground. The sale takes place on Monday, November 24. Full particulars are advertised. “Are you in iavour of the Government bringing in an Act to prevent certain Maoris from tickling whitebait in the Otaki river,” was a question by Mr Bowden at Wednesday night’s political meeting. The question was treated with silent contempt by the candidate.

The dance, held at Te Horo on Wednesday night, was so successful that it has been decided to hold another next week. There was a splendid attendance, the floor was in good order, the music (supplied by Mr? Day) wns firstclass. while Mr Grondin made an efficient M.C. During the evening a number of couples were taught the Canadian tango and the Destiny waltz. All appreciated the efforts #f Mr Grondin, who gave lessons free of charge.

It is now only a little time away from the anniversary of the big outbreak of influenza in Wellington, and if is satisfactory to see that jhe signs and portents do not indicate a serious recurrence of the complaint in its deadly form. Consulted on the matter, the medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital (Dr. R. Woodhouse) said that the only form of influenza nowbeing encountered in Wellington was a very mild variety. Only once in a while was there a ease of pneumonic influenza, and the variety which most forbade hope from the outset was nonexistent. He did not anticipate that Wellington would have another visitation of the malady in its acute form

Good progress is being made with the erection of the new post oflicc at Packakariki. The new building will be comfortable and well-appointed, and will be fully appreciated when completed. especially in the summer time, when tlio influx of visitors makes this promising summer resort a Very busy place.

Farmers do not, as a rule, believe in wasting anything—not even time. Recently a young dairy farmer near Opunake decided to marry. On the wedding day lie milked Ilie cows as usual, motored a distance of 30 miles and said “I will,” and returned home by motor with his bride in time for the evening’s milking. Obliging neighbours. however, packed him oil on a honeymoon.

At the Otaki Literary and Debating Club’s meeting on Wednesday night, the President (Rev. Petrie), in referring to the splendid success of the two evenings devoted to children’s competitions, said it was hoped, next year, to hold elocutionary and musical competitions 011 a much larger scale, open to the whole district. Judging by the interest taken in the competitions held tv the Club recently, he felt sure they could make a success of a bigger venture, and the matter would be put on a proper footing next winter.

A shop day will be held to-morrow at the supper-room of Brights’ Theatre, to raise funds for improvements to the Otaki Public Library living-rooms. This is an object that should have the support of all. The library committee has been compelled to go to considerable expense in improvements and additions to the building, in order to make the place habitable for the .lady librarian recently appointed, and the public are asked to support to-morrow’s shop. Those who 'can assist by donations of any kind would oblige by sending same along, while it is hoped there wilfTie many buyers for the goods that will be under offer.

A long-night dance, at which new dances. now so popular in England and other parts, and which are being taught at big fees, will take place at Te Horo on Wednesday night next, when it is expected that visitors . from Levin, Ohtiu, Otaki, and other townships will be present. The dances Canadian tango, Destiny waltz, Ladbrook and a three-step—are all very effective, while the music is prettily arranged. These dances, it mar be mentioned, will be talight free of charge by an expert between the hour.- c*f 7 and 8 p.m., and it i* hoped all present will avail thems< Ives of the opportunity to learn. From 8 p.rn. onwards the usual dances will be indulged in, and. all may rely upon spending a pleasant time. Particulars are advertised.
