OTAKI PEACE MEMORIAL.
A meeting of the committee of tho above was held at the Town Board’ offices on Monday night, when there were present: Dr. Huthwaitc (chairman), Rev. Petrie, Messrs Albert Smith, J. S. Pole; Byron ’Brown, J. B. Bills, T. B. Bax, L. St. George, and Frank Penn. ' . The meeting discussed the best means of raising the money required for the proposed peaee memorial, and it was decided that the canvassers (Messrs H. Freeman and T. B. Bax) be provided with printed promise forms; also that the leading town and district residents be assessed at certain sums, and canvassed for these amounts. Other details in connection with the collection of funds were discussed.
Mr Byron Brown 'was asked as to whether the Town Board would make a donation towards the fund, seeing that the proposed building would provide the Board with up-to-date offices. Mr Brown said he could not commit the Board, but personally he thought tho Board should make a donation, and suggested the Board might possibly give, say, £250, spread over two years.
It was resolved that those who wished to assist the fund be given the option of donating a lump sum-, or giving in instalments, extending over a period of two years.
It was decided to open a post office savings bank account, while tho secretary was authorised to secure tho necessary books, etc. The canvassers will be waiting on residents within a few days, and it is hoped the publie will make a generous response to the appeal.
