PRICE OF MEAT IN 1896.
In view of the present prices of butchers’ meat it is interesting to find that in the first issue of the Hastings “Standard,” on Monday, April 27th, IS9G, Mr Charles Hughes, of Hastings, who was then running a large butchery establishment in Heretaunga Street, Hastings, had an advertisement in which he announced the following prices for meat, per lb: —“Beef: Sirloins 4d, ribs 3d, other roasts 2J3, rounds 3d, briskets 2d, corned beef 2d, rump steak sd, beef steak 4d, sausages (a specialty) 3d. Mutton: Hindquarters 2d. forequarters lJd, legs 2d, shoulders 2d, loins 2d, chops (trimmed) 3d. Veal,’3d. Pork: All joints 4d, sausages 4d. Families waited on with carts daily. ’ ’
