PORFITEERING.
A LEVIN FARMERS’ EXPERIENCE An instance of “profiteering,” as viewed in the eyes of a small fanner, was quoted by Mr -T. C. Neill, the Levin delegate at the R.S.A. Conference on Friday. A small farmer like himself, said Mr Neill, sent four sacks of firstrate cauliflowers to Wellington. Having noticed the prices which were obtaining for cauliflowers in Wellington, the speaker remarked that he must have obtained a good turnover. The other replied that he had not—that his net return from the whole lot after paying for everything including railage and •auction fees, amounted to lid! The result was that the farmer in question turned his pigs on to his remaining cauliflowers. Mr Neill said doubtless the auctioneer and the carter etc., had to live, but it would be seen that tho farmer himself did not get much out of it. He wanted the city people to look at the country side as well.
