LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.
CHILDREN'S EVENING. • A RECORD SUCCESS. The second "Children's Evening" of this session held by the local Literary and Debating Club, was even more successful than the first, and was a record gathering in every way. The Druids' Hall was all too small for the large crowd that assembled, and that building has never before, we believe, been packed as it was; on Friday night 1 last. Tho competitions were keenly entered into by the children, entries being most numerous. There was scarcely a class with less than twenty competitors, and in some sections as many as forty. The children were very keen in their work, and the standard of the work done, on the whole, was excellent. Mr Byron Brown, who acted as judge of the elocutionary sections, was well pleased with the work, saying that quite a number of the children gave promise of making capital performers. Mrs 11. O. Jones and Rev. Petrie acted as judge in the pianoforte section, Mr Rudkin judged the drawings, and Mr Frank Penn the essays. .
The competitions 'commenced at 7. p.m.. and notwithstanding the fact that some of the work was "doublebanked" and flic competitions were carried out under capital management, it was 11 p.m. before they were concluded. Following are the results of the various competitions:Spelling, children over II years.—E. D'Ath I. G. Cotterell 2. Drawing, animal or man, under supervisiou.—B. Harper 1, R. Watts 2. Most, original drawing ("Charlie Chaplin"). —Owen Knox 1. Essay —Ethel .Tones 1, Alfred King 2. Filby Pickett 3. Recitation, standard 4 and under.— Olive Anderson 1. Betty Davidson 2. Recitation, over standard -I.—Mavis Murphy 1, Leo Bowden 2. Sight reading, over standard 4. Ethel Jones 1, Madge Kirkland 2. Sight reading, standard 4 and under. —Patty D'Ath 1, Raynor Stevens 2. Pianoforte selection.—Beryl D'Ath 1, Madge Kirkland 2, Molly D'Ath 3. Great credit is due to the committee of the cluli (comprising Rev. Petrie. 'Sister Lewis, Miss Hitching and Mr A. R. Rudkin) for the great amount of trouble they had taken in making the arrangements for one of the most pleasant evenings spent in Otaki. . Prizes were awarded all those placed first and second in the various sections, these being donated by friends.
