THE OTAKI MAIL. Published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1919. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

For the cause that lacks assistance, i For the wrongs that need resistance, j For the future in the distance, l And the good that we can do.

—♦ Owing to the holidays there will be no issue of the “Otaki Mail” on Monday next (Dominion Day). The troopship Ayrshire is expected to arrive in Lyttelton on Friday evening or Saturday morning. The vessel has on board an English mail. There are 831 receptacles. 523 being bags of ordinary mails and 308 bags of parcels. The monthly stock sale at Otaki takes place on Wednesday next, when good lists of entries will be submitted by Messrs Abraham and Williams, .Ltd., and Dalgety and Co., Ltd., as advertised.

Owing to the alteration of mail trains, commencing next week, mails for north will close at the Otaki post office at 9.40 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and southern afternoon mails will close at 4.25 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Besides spring millinery, spring drc-sses, and spring shoe styles, spring hose is necessary to show this apparel off to the best advantage. But there’s hose and hose. Stiles and Matheson’s ko»C is spun silk hose, and it conies in many new stripe effects. Read Stiles and Matheson-'s advertisement in this paper. In connection with the War Loan, attention of taxpayers is drawn to the fact that tile compulsory provisions of the Finance Act, 1913, will be put into operation, and the fact that persons who are required to subscribe under compulsion will only receive 3 per cent by way of interest on their investments. There is very little time longer in which to subscribe to the loan, and we would again urge every loyal citizen to do his or her best to support the country in this effort to raise money which is absolutely necessary in order to meet contingencies arising out of the warT

Commencing on Monday next the train service will be further improved, and trains will run as stated elsewhere. [ Among the additions, trains will leave as follows:—From Palmerston for Napier on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, leave Napier for Palmerston c t Monday, Wednesday and Friday, leave Wellington for New Plymouth on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, leave New Plymouth for Wellington on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, leave Wellington for Woodville on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, leave Woodville for Wellington on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Further particulars appear elsewhere.

Replying to a question by Mr Nash, 3 in the House on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said he knew how irritating was the permit system re train travelling. He had consulted the general manager, and instructions had been given that if possible the permit system should be dropped after this week. This will be good news to our readers, ; as the permit system is condemned by ' all. ' Big stocks of summer footwear have - arrived at Mr Andrew’s Stores from leading manufacturers, and Mr And«ug| was very lucky in escaping recent fK rises. This J variety was obtained from a cross from 1 King Alfred and Lord Roberts. The 5 judge (Mr Buckingham) awarded the 3 bloom first prize in its class, and also 1 champion bloom of the show. Mr 3 Buckingham told an “Otaki Mail” tc--3 porter that the bloom was one of the finest trumpets he had ever seen. He also expressed the opinion that the time , nas coming when New Zealand would = be able to supply its own novelties in- , stead of importing them, as many fine s seedlings were now being produced in • this land. Mr A. J. Hobbs, of Hutt, also showed some very fine seedling daffodils at the Otaki Show. L Your boys, like everyone else’* boys, ! are still wearing out elbows and knees, : Mill kicking the soles off boots, and the 1 problem of how to clothe them seems no nearer solution. Boys can’t help knocking their clothes out'; it’s natural , with them. Still they have to be j dressed neatly on occasion, end there ; is nothing smarter than a well-made tweed or navy suit. When mothers are in Wellington they should make a point of inspecting our big stocks of suits for boys from four to eighteen j years of age. They cost from 29s Gd to j 555. j GEO.
