Mr Ryan, who has been relieving at the local branch of the Bank of Australasia, will probably leave for Australia at an early dale.
Mr and Mrs 11. Larkin leave Otaki tomorrow for Onchunga by the Auckland express. They will carry with them the best wishes of a host of friends throughout. tho district.
Flight-Lieutenant. Winton Brown, son of Mr and Airs Byron Brown, returned home on Friday by the Manuka. lie looks fit and well and in the best of spirits.
Mr G. Alex. Monk (county chairman) has been approached with a view to becoming a candidate for the .Otaki seat. At r Monk will give a definite answer almost .immediately, should he agree to accept nomination, Mr Monk is assured of much support throughout the electorate.
At .At. Mary’s Church, Otaki, yesterday, prayers were asked for Rev. Father Brussard, who died at New < akdonia on August 24th. The late Father Brussard was first parish priest at Otaki, being succeeded by Rev. Father Melu in lti'JO. After some years’ work in Wanganui and Nelson lie left for New Caledonia.
Mr and Airs H. K. Elder utjjl Mrs Earl, who have been residents of Waikanae.for some years, left to-day for Havelock North, where they will take up residence. Mr and Airs E. Brown lea'te Waikanae next week to take up residence in Wellington, while it istated that, several other AVnikanac
residents will shortly be leaving for other parts.
The death occurred yesterday of Air Moses Tav.aru. a well-known Ngutiraukuwa Maori, of Otaki, and known in the early days at “Fighting Moses.’’ Deceased, who was well over 7b yeans of age, was one of the few Natives who retained a knowledge of the art of Maori building, and was one of those who erected the wharepunis at the Otaki seaside resort. Deceased leaves a wife and grown-up family.
The death occurred at the Otaki Hospital last week' of Air Robert Thompson, son of Air E. Thompson, of Waikanae, in his Ikth year. Deceased, who had resided in ‘Waikanae all hi* life, was a promising and popular young man, and much regret, is felt at his. early demise. The funeral took place on Saturday at Waikanae. when practically the whole population was present. The service was conducted by the Hev. H. Daaiel. of Otaki.
A pleasing little ceremony took place at the dance at Otaki on Friday night, following the picture entertainment in aid of the local branch of the R.S'.A. Captain T. B. Bax, on behalf of the branch, presented Sister Lewis with a S.S.A. badge. (similar in. design to the soldiers’ badge, only; having a small red cross on the silver bar). Captain Bax referred to the magnificent work done by the nurse? in the war, and eulogised the exceptionally fine record of Otaki'.? "little nurse,” fritter Lewis, who had a splendid record. Similar badges are to be presented to if titer Pownall and Miss Simeox. who are also members of the local branch of the R-S.A.. but were unable to be present at Friday night’s function.
