A letter was read at the County meeting on Saturday front Mr T. H. Powles, of Chau, who drew attention to the ex-

cessive and dangerous.speed of motor ears passing through Ohau township. The Chairman said it was recognised that top speeds were registered in Horowhenua on account of the good roads. Cr. Harkness said at times cars passed through Ohau at HO miles an hour, and an accident was bound to barmen. It. was decided to ask the police to take action in any glaring case in any part of the County.

During an interval in the picture entertainment at Otaki on Friday night, Captain T. B. Bax, on behalf of the Otaki branch of the E.S.A., returned hearty thanks to all who were present for their practical sympathy with the R.S.A. movement. Captain Bax said the bsanch was out to secure funds in order to establish a soldiers’ club, and intended to hold a big ball in October and an entertainment at a later date. ' When a letter of appreciation of the nursing staff was being read at Thursday’s meeting of the Palmerston N. Hospital Board, Mrs Gill said she had heard that the nurses had golden syrup for tea, and that was all they were getting to put on their bread. She thought this was poor appreciation of the nurses’ services.. They should have some sort of variety. She moved that the matron be asked to report whether what she (Mrs Gill) had stated was a fact. The chairman (Sir James Wilson): Golden syrup is a very wholesome thing. I like it myself. Mrs Gill: You get it so rarely that it is a treat. The question was referred to tho executive for enquiry and report.
