DISTRICT NURSE.
ONE FOR WAIKANAE IN SIGHT. The appoiafnient of a district nurse for the Waikanac district was tho subject of a letter received at the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday from the secretary of the District Nurse Provisional Committee at Waikanac (Mr G. Kcrasley), who wrote applying for a district nurse to be appointed for the Waikanae -Rikiorangi district. The district was prepared to guarantee £75 to £SO per year towards salary and expenses. Part of the district was in the Wellington Hospital area, but the committee assumed that an arrangement could be made between the two Boards cencerned whereby the Palmerston EoaTd might be the ruling power as far as the nurse was concerned. With regard to this matter the AYellington Board wrote suggesting the nurse should be appointed by them, provided the Palmerston Board was willing. It was not thought advisable that the nurse should be under the dual control of both Boards. A circular letter from the Department with regard to the supply of nurses and doctors to outer districts, and another one forwarding the rules governing the appointment of district nurses, were also read.
The Chairman said that the Wellington Board had already appointed a ] nurse to cover the lower end of the distriet at a salary of £2OO. Mr Pchii explained that Paraparaumu had made application to the Wellington Board and the nurse had been appointed in accordance with the reguln- | tions supplied by the Department, which provided that board* eannot refuse to appoint a nurse if the district agreed to pay half of her salary. This would be subsidised by the Government to the extent of 24s in the £. so that the appointment would cost the board very little. Waikanae had applied to the Wellington Board in error, as only >ome five houses in that district were in the Wellington Board's district. He >uggested that they should appoint a nurse on the same lines as Wellington hyd doxc. Mr Hornblow pointed oat that while he did not wanr to prejudice Waikanae 's chances, there were other more out-of-the-way places which needed the services of. a more than Waikanae. | Mr Penn ia reply stated that there was only one doeto/ between Levin and Paekaknriki, a distance of 35 miles. 5e moved'that provided the committee pay to the Board the guaranteed sum ap-
plications be called for the position of a • district nurse. . . After a little further discussion this was agreed to.—" Palmerston Daily Times." , / 1 . '
