CHILDREN’S EVENING.

UNDER AUSPICES OF LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB. So successful was llie last children’s evening held by the local Otaki Literary and Debating Club that it was decided to hold smother similstr evening on Friday, I9th inst., and tho programme for same is advertised in today’s issue. A number of competitions have been arranged for children—drawing, reciting, spelling, pianoforte playing, sight reading and esssiys. Capitsil prizes are offered in each section—ss for first prizes, and boxes of chocolate* for second prizes. The children are allowed their own selections for the pianoforto piece and recitations, but only short pieces should be chosen. Competitors should bring pencils. The essay (“Which would you rather be—a boy or a girl? Why?”) should furnish excellent scope for the children. Entries for the essay close on the 17th inst., and for all other items on the 18th insi.—all at the “Mail” office. Seeing that these competitions are most helpful to the children, it is hoped that parents and ethers will endeavour to persuade the children to compete. Already practically all the prizes required have been offered. A splendid evening’s entertainment is promised, and a very large attendance is anticipated. Tho meeting will be an open ofe; freer to. all.
