Mr and Mrs Gardes, lalo of the Family Hotel (Foxton) leave shortly on a Continental tour.
Mr W. Bock has resigned his position as secretary to the Foxton Harbour Board, a position he has held since its inception. Mr F. D. Whibley has been ap-pointed to the vacancy.
The Feilding “Star” says there is a strong probability that Mr Clutha Mackenzie will stand for the North Bangitikei seat at the coming general elections.
Among those to return to Levin last week was Sergeant A. W. Richter, formerly on the staff of Messrs Abraham and Williams there. He was accompanied by Mrs Richter.
Mr W. H. Reynolds, late of Otaki, writing from Newport News, says he and Mrs and Miss Reynolds had had a splendid voyage up to the time of writing. They were delighted with the wonders of the Panama Canal and the beauties of the gardens in Jamaica. They expected to reach England on August 3rd.
The death occurred this morning of Mr .Waaka Naiha, a well-known Native of this town, who was born here about 45 years ago. Deceased, who leaves a wife and family, was getting about till within a few days ago. Some years ago Waaka was a prominent footballer, playing for several seasons for the old •Era Toa Club.
There died at Manuluko, near Gisborne, last week, Amiria To Ipoki, a Maori woman 95 years of ago. Her early days abounded with stirring incidents, one being on the occasion of her marriage to a European. When the banns were read out in the old Manutukc church rival chiefs opened a display of hostilities. A big fight between the tribesmen followed in the church, but Amiria’s people triumphed and the marriage took place. After the death of her first husband she married a Maori shief, who was subsequently murdered by To Kooti. She had seven children, but To Kooti carried her into captivity. Later she was released, and throughi»Hfc the Maori war was able, as also were her children, to assist Europeans whoso litfßS were endangered by the rebel Natives. One son gave his lilte for his country in the Great War just aoncluded, while a great grandson is an officer in the British Air Force.
