A boy colt, impounded Otaki. will be sold on Tuesday if not claimed before that date. It is probable that a motor service will be inaugurated between Otaki and Palmerston North. ilr Harold Cockrell is now opening his new season’s goods arid invites residents to call and inspect. Tenders close on September 4th lor cleaning 20 chains of drain (more or less) for the Otaki Town Board. Mr W. J. Diaper, of Te Horo, has in stock a fresh assortment of good, strong, reliable boots and shoes, which should be inspected. They are of firstclass Quality and low in price. An address, which should prove in- ' teresting and instructive, will lie given ' at the Otaki Heading-room this/evening ' by Mr A. W. Broadway, the subject being on vegetable growing. All are cordially invited to attend. The daily papers in Christchurch, which have been selling all through the war period at one penny—the •sly papers in the Dominion not increased in price—are to be sold at 1 Id to regular subscribers, and 2d to casual purchasers, as from Ist September. The Tainui Hockey Club members have decided to hold a social and dance on Friday, Septmber sth, in Bright s’ Theatre, and judging by the enthusiasm of members and supporters the function should r/rove very successful. Ticket* should sell readily at 2s fid for gents and Is for ladies (supper included). The fortnightly meeting of the Otaki Literary and Debating Club on Monday night next will be devoted to “Historical Otaki.” Seeing that Otaki figures so prominently in the history of New Zealand, this should furnish a profitable evening, and there should be a full attendance of members. The subject will be- introduced by Mr Penn. ! Despite the fact that heavy fines •were recently inflicted on person* for stealing vegetables in Foxton, thefts are still being carried on. In Otaki similar thefts arc also common. A dance that should prove most enjoyable will be held in Brights' Theatre to-night, when the funds raised will be devoted to the renovation of the Tainui meeting-house. The s.s. Kennedy arrived at Foxton oh her initial trip in the Foxton trade on Sunday with a load of general cargo. She returned to Wellington with tallow and hemp. I Advt. r Dr. Elizabeth Gunn reported to the Wanganui Education Board that goitre is spreading seriously, and mentioned that of fii girls examined, between the ages of 11 and 14, 31 had goitre, and 23 were without it. Dr. Guna-is convinced that the use of iodine would help materially to prevent the spread of this disease. The clearing sale, to be conducted by Mr G. Anderson on behalf of Major Addingtou, to-morrow, should be largely * attended.
