, • TENNIS CLUB. . The annual meeting of members of !'.tlie Manakau Tennis Club was held last night, when, despiite the weather, theie was a capital attendance of about twenty. Mr J. 11. Andrew (president) occupied the chair. At the commencement of the meet-, ing a vote of sympathy with Mrs W. Dalzell; in the death of hor brother, Mr W. Gray, was passed, all standing. No written report was presented, but the chairman briefly gave an account of the last year's work. The club had had a most successful season. Two matches .jOhly had been played—both with Shannon, and Manakau had won both.
- The balance-sheet showed a credit balance in hand of about £2O. It was explained the contract for court improvements was £SO. The contractor had been paid £2O, while another £l3 had been passed for payment, but the contractor preferred that this be not paid over until the work was completed. There would be, after meeting all liabilities, a deficit of about £lO, which was regarded as satisfactory.
Mr P. Simcox moved his inotion, notice of which had- previously been given, amending the club membership fees as follows: —lien, annual subscription 15s, entry fee 3s; ladies, subscription 7s (id, entry fee 2s-(3d. After a full discussion the motion w _ as carried unanimously. The following officers were elected
for the ensuing year, viz.:—Patron, Major Tatum; president. Mr C. Cotter; vice-presidents, Mrs Burnell and Mr Howard Andrew; hon. secretary. Mr A. Trevethick; committee, Misses Houghton, Mancy and Oxter. Messrs P. Simcox. Kofoed, Childs, and B. George; auditor, Mr. C. Noes; match committee, Mrs Burnell and Messrs P. Simcox and Andrew.
It, was decided to open (he season on Wednesday, October Bth. if possible. The club rules has ins been destroyed by lire, a s\ib-committce, comprising Mrs Burnell, Messrs Simcox. Andrew
and the secretary, was set up to draft new rules, and submit same to a general
meeting for adoption. Mr Mickle pointed out the necessity for having the ground in the Vicinity of the courts levelled and sown down with grass, and the meeting decided to have this necessary work done at a convenient time, as soon as possible. The following new members were duly elected: Mcsdames Stewart. Smith;'Ward, Misses 6 rev. Evans and Hammond, Messrs Lcs. Atkins, Les. Staples, Miles Bros. (2), Pi--- and Ward. The prospects for the coming season are very cheering. The chairman heartily thanked the officers for good work done during the past season. , NOTES. Private V. Nees, son of Mr and Mrs C. Nees, returned to his home at Manakau on Wednesday evening. after seventeen months' active service. He was met by a number of friends, and heartily welcomed home. Private Nees will be welcomed, together with other returned soldiers, at a social gathering, which was arranged for Wednesday next, but has been postponed tor a week in order not to clash with another function. Mr and Mrs W. Dalzell are both away in Wellington, to attend the funeral of Mr W. Gray, of the Tourist Department. Wellington, who has succumbed to a long illness. Mr Gray was brother to Mrs Dalzell, with whom much sympathy is felt in her sorrow. Mrs Dalzell lost a brother (Sergeant A. Gray, M.M.) in active service some little time ago.
