MISCELLANEOUS.
The following remits were adopted at a meeting of the Wanganui Schools Committee, and will be sent on to .the School Committees’ Association Conference, to be held in AA ellington on 3rd September:—(l) Free secular education for all children up to 16 years, the word “free” to mean the provision of all books and material required for children in the course of their education. A novel scene was witnessed in Patea recently when a motor lorry passed through the tOwn with a large cage on it. In tlie cage was a very fine cow, which was -being conveyed south by this means owing to tlie railway not being available.
That the ‘‘permit” system is having its effect on at least some of the trains is shown in a letter received by an Auckland business house from one of its travellers. ‘‘The Thames train went out to-day,” he said, ‘‘with one passenger, two guards, and a ticket inspector. Guess they would have a busy time punching tickets.”
Deprived completely of the power of speech, alter being gassed in March, 1918, Private A. E. Pearson, East Stratford (England) has been cured in a remarkable manner. Ilis mother punched him playfully, and Pearson exclaimed “Don’t!” Since then lie has been able to speak almost as well as ever, except that-talking slightly pains him.
