SEASONS FOB THE DRASTIC CUT

MINISTER'S EXPLANATION.

The reasons for the drastic cut in the Sailway services of the Dominion were given by the Hon. T. M. Wilford at a public meeting at Lower Hutt last evening. Mr Wilford said that he had Sthat day received a lettor'from the Minister of Railways (Hon. W. H. Sorties) setting forth the reasons for the {restrictions.

They were as follow: (1) The weekly consumption of coal by the Railway Department in the Dojninion amounted to 5000 tons. (2) At date there was sufficient coal ia Stock to last between nine or teu ' S (3) The coal in sight for delivery up •to tho second week in August was 9000 (4) It was hoped that the drastic curtailment would reduce the consumption by at least half, and preferably by 2000 tons a week. (5) The object in cutting out the excesses was to reduce train mileage. The Department proposed to run only one train to servo both through and wayside passengers, and carrying toodEtuffs and perishable goods to all stations. , . . . • (6) The shortage of coal is mainly due to the strike and epidemic in Australia When the strike ended no immediate relief could bo expected, as ships fcaa to bo sent over there, and on their seturn quarantine regulations would Bavo to bo complied with. (7) The Government was doiug its B tittOSt to obtain ships and coal. Tho above, said Mr Wilford. was, he believed, a true position of affairs.
