PRESENTATION TO MR G. CATLEY.

[." "" ♦ —- BY HATJTEEB RITLE CLXTB. "~~ During tho progress of tho Hautcre Kific Club's annual ball, at Te Horo on Wednesday evening, a presentation , was made by Mr W. 11. Field, M.P., on j behalf of tho club, to Mr G. P. Catley. ' Mr Field! said that Mr Catley had been i president of the club for six years, and I had shown keen interest in the club; indeed it was largely owing to his efforts that the club had been kept in existence during the strenuous time of • the war. The large attendance at that

j night's function was a monument to I the esteem in which Mr Catley was i held. Mr Catley originally came from | Makara: He had been a very hard- ; working man, and a thrifty farmer, and by dint of hard work and perseverance had won for' himself such a position ! that he was now able to retire from the strenuous work of farming. Mr Catley I had not only been a shining light in I Rifle Club affairs, but had represented the district on local bodies, had been i a kindly neighbour, and had assisted in many Te Horo activities. Person-' ally, said Mr Field, ho was sorry Te I Horo was losing such a good settler, j who would carry with him tho best ' wishes of every member of the community, but it was pleasing to know I that he was not going very far away. ! On behalf of the Hauterc Rifle Club members Mr Field then presented Mr Catley with a splendid solid leather travelling bag, suitably inscribed. Mr Catley, in reply, said he had heard rumours of a presentation, and had asked that nothing be done in that direction. Ho did not think he deserved any credit for what he had done. He had certainly taken a keen interest in the Hauterc Club, and done his best for it, but he had done so largely because of his love for the sport. As I they knew, the club had almost gone under, and he had consented to 'continue as acting president, by request of the Defence authorities. Now, however, that normal times were assured. he hoped that the club would take a now lease of life, and that the mom- , bers would do their best to-advance its interests. Mr Catley, said he had beenproud to act as president of the club, and would always take a keen interest in the club's welfare. One of his chief regrets at leaving Te Horo was in severing his connection with the club. In conclusion, Mr Catley thanked Mr Field for his remarks, and the club members for the kindly feelings which prompted them in making the handsome presentation. He wished the club every possible success in tho future, and specially recommended the young men of the district to rally round and support the club. "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was then sung most heartily, and so ended a happy function.
