MANAKAU NOTES.
Mr Howard Andrew, who has been in an indifferent state of health for some time, is now making good improvement. He is at present spending a quiet holiday at Te Aroha. The Horowhenua County Council is to be commended for the fine work done by its roadmen on the main thoroughfare botwoen Otaki and Manakau. Several nasty corners have been removed, and the road, in bad places, widened considerably. Metal, from the new. pit. is also being made good use of.
It is stated that Mr Daroux has sold his property to Mr Ward, a relative of our respected schoolmaster. Unfortunately, the change has been made on account of the serious illness of Mrs Daroux, who recently underwent an operation. This lady has been in indifferent health for some time, and will shortly leave for Lyall Bay for a change, after which she will undergo treatment at Rotorua. It is hoped the change will be benfeficial, and that Mr and Mrs Daroux will again take up residence here. Mr and Mrs Alf. Atkius, who have been popular residents of the township, take up residence at Levin next week. Mr and Mrs C. Aplin and family left on Saturday for Ngaio. where they have secured a fine residential property. Messrs Miles Bros, have taken over ilr Aplin's farm, while Mr Creed takes possession of Messrs Miles' pro-
pcrty. Mr Knight, who recently sold to Mr J. Nicholson, has decided to take up residence in the Hutt district, where he has a nice property. Changes are in the air in all directions, and it is now stated that Mr T. Rawiri has sold his snug little property of forty acres at Kuku to Mr Bowling at £IOO an acre. Mr MeHurry returned home yesterday, after spending a very pleasant holiday at Christchurch. Ashburton, , Grcymouth and Hokitika. Mrs Grimwood, of Petone, is at present spending a holiday here, staying" with her daughter, Mrs Bradshaw. It is reported here that Mr Frank i Winter, late of Manakau, has gone into j the "movie" picture business at Lyall I Bay. With ordinary luck he should do well. The Education-Department has notified the tennis club that it cannot give a 21 years' lease of the property on which the court? are situate, but is : wiling to lease it for a term of seven ; years, with the first refusal thereafter. Minor improvements have been effected at the local tennis courts, and it is now the intention of the club, with a fair sum of money at ts disposal, to asphalt the second court and to effect other improvements. Great credit is due to Mrs Mickle. who was largely instrumental in raising some £7 by the , recent pinfaore ball. The general business carried on un3er the able control of Mrs McHarry has changed hands, Mr D. E. Bathgate. whdSSpreviously managed the concern, being the purchaser. ' The supply of milk at the local factory is on the down grade, which is natural for this time of the year. The season, however, has been a most satisfactory one, and suppliers have no cause for complaint. Mr Perh3m. who was severely injured while doing duty for King and country, received an urgent call last week to proceed to Dnnedin. where he is to undergo special treatment for an injured jaw. It is hoped Mr Perliam will shortly return greatly benefitted.
