HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT

The County Engineer (Mr' J. Malcolm) submitted the following report:— Te Horo Riding. I regret to say I have been unable to got the crushing plant removed to Lie Otaki river this week. Two or three more days will finish up where they are, in fact if the engine-driver had "not been taken ill I think it is probable we would have moved yesterday. It turns out as I told you—in most places or: the main road there is plenty of metal. When it is scarified and broken iro a load of metal will go over chains of it. Our greatest need is more rolling power. A day off cannot be made

I was over the, main road from To Horo to'AVaikanae the day before the Otaki races, and was much pleased with it. How it stood the traffic of cars to the races I can only write from hearsay, but a motorist on Thursday assured.me the road was very good.

The roadman reports that' the Otaki Gome road is now in very good order. He lias just finished the metalling of the worst parts. Otaki Riding. I have finished the road widening in the sooth end .of the riding for the year, and am now getting the culverts attended to. I hope to be able to report at next meeting that good headway has been made with the renovation of the main road.

I got the trees cut down in the Mann? kau cemetery, ft proved a bigger job than 1 anticipated, but it is a job well done as the trees were quite unsuitable for the place they were in. Mr R. Bcvnii promises to snig the tree trunks down to the lower corner by the South Mnnakau road. They will be outvof the way there, as no one will take them Cor the. firewood.

I have started the men to take off the sharp corner on the North Manakau road. It will always be a dangerous place, whatever is done with it. I will try and get the plans and specifications ready at once for the Waikawa Beach road regarding, and if the Public Works Department approves in time I will invite tenders for npxt meeting of the Council. Wirokino Riding. There is still little doing in this riding. I have got a three-horse team with the single horse and dray filling the pot holes in the roads, just keeping them passable. Tokomaru Riding. I have managed to make arrangements for the cartng of the metal required on the south or Shannon end of the riding. The contractor will start as soon as another dray comes forward. It is being built in I'almerston and is promised in a few days. All the roads in the north end are good, and little will lie required this year with the exception of some culverts. '
