Y.M.C A FOR LEVIN.
* T AN IMPORTANT MOVE. The N.Z. National Committee of the Y.M.C.A. has made , an important decision in regard to this district by deciding to commence operations under what is known as the rural or community scheme, which aims at linking up a number of committees under the guidance of an expert organiser. This method, of work has made a splendid success in other lands, and should meet a /very obvious need in districts like this one. The financial obligation being spread over a number of communities removes a very real obstacle, while the guiding hand of the expert obviates many of the blunders of well- . meaning amateurs. i Mr 8. J. Gilbert, who has already • arrived in Levin, is spying out the land and hopes to have a meeting of business men and other sympathisers at an . early date. Mr Gilbert was in charge of the Y.M.C.A. hutment at the Narrow Neck camp for over two years, and made good in a marked degree. He j is, like all Y.M.C.A. workers, an on- j thusiast in athletics, and was also one of Dunedin’s leading vocalists and . musicians, having taken oratoria solo work and been conductor of brass and string bands in the southern city. Such a man in oar midst would be a real acquisition, and it. behoves residents who have the welfare of the rising manhood at heart to rally round the newcomer and see that he receives the support, his great cause deserves. It is proposed to link up Otaki, Levin, Foxton and Shannon, and to organise work on the Mangtihao hvdro-clectric scheme, where 700 men will shortly be cmplo';eci.—“Chronicle.”
